A fabulous weekend in the Golden Triangle of the Costa Brava
It's 9 in the morning and my cell phone alarm wakes me up. I half open my eyes and confirm that it is sunny today too. The first rays are already coming through the bedroom window. I hurry to open the window and breathe deeply, trying to capture the essence of salt water and pine trees as much as possible. Not only am I on the Costa Brava, but I am in one of the most select places in the country: the Golden Triangle of the Costa Brava!
After a good breakfast at the hotel, we put on our boots and hit the coastal path that goes from Calella to Llafranc. Nothing like stretching your legs in the morning now that the sun is not yet shining.
The weekend started even better the night before, with dinner at the Hotel - Restaurant El Far (the lighthouse of San Sebastián). A delicious beef carpaccio with foie and dried fruit vinaigrette. That dinner could only be improved in one way: staying the night at the hotel and waking up the next day to one of the best sunrises in this country. But this will have to be another time.
We arrived at Llafranc in just twenty minutes along a simple and very pleasant path (yes, with some stairs). There we had breakfast on the beach and sat on the sand to do something we love: watch life go by. Afterwards, we bought tickets for a boat excursion through the coves of Llafranc and Tamariu with a visit to some of their mysterious caves included.
Time to eat and time to return to Calella along the coastal path. We grabbed a bite to eat at one of their fresh fish restaurants. Calella is a typically Mediterranean town full of charm. One of the most beautiful towns in Catalonia, in my opinion. We eat on the beach of Port Pelegrí. They have turbot as the fish of the day and our mouths are watering.
After a necessary nap on the sand by the sea, we take the car to Pals. We found a very good atmosphere and it is a pleasure to walk through its cobblestone streets, entering and leaving the shops that we discover along the way.
We had dinner at Es Portal Hotel Gastronòmic, on the outskirts of Pals. We have heard very good recommendations and the tasting menu leaves us with a very good taste in our mouths. A 10! Es Portal is part of the Empordà gastronomic collective “Cuina de l'Empordanet”. I highlight the quality of the product (from Km. 0), the preparation and presentation at an excellent level.
We finished early and the night is long. We went to Begur to have a drink. The streets of Begur are packed to the brim and have a lot of personality. The Can Marc Garden is an excellent place to have a chillout drink with great views of the castle, illuminated at night. We won't go up anymore, but if you pass through Begur during the day, don't miss it
The next day the sky gives us another day of sun. Good things about living in the Mediterranean, right? We take the car and go to explore the beaches of Tamariu, Agua Xelida and Aiguablava. Beautiful three! Today it is blowing a little wind but we are well protected on the beach.
It is obvious that we are in the heart of the Costa Brava; Here it is more difficult than ever to put the towel down but we manage to make a space for ourselves and enjoy the well-deserved views. Turquoise blue water and that Mediterranean landscape that is so characteristic of the Costa Brava. Fabulous!
From Aiguablava we decided to walk along the coastal path to continue seeing the landscape while walking among pine trees. We arrive at Playa Fonda and return back (one hour in total). Playa Fonda is a cove of stones and quite deep. To get there you have to go down a lot of steps but it is worth it.
We reserved a table at the Aigua Blava Hotel restaurant where we can eat a delicious lunch menu with the first views of the sea. In addition, the hotel is at the foot of the coastal path and so you don't have to go far. It is one of those places with lifelong customers, coming from all over and who know the waiters by name.
With our strength recovered, we take the car to visit Sa Tuna, a small paradise and without a doubt one of the most beautiful corners of the Costa Brava. It is a beautiful fishing village with white houses on the beach. And precisely on the edge of the beach is the Hostal Sa Tuna, and we are signing it up for our next getaway to the Costa Brava. For now, we sat on the terrace of their restaurant to make some second desserts and a coffee.
We don't want the day to end. We extended it by making a quick visit to Aiguafreda, another cove with turquoise colors and a postcard landscape.
The Golden Triangle of the Costa Brava is the imaginary line that joins three points on the map of the Costa Brava: Pals, Sa Tuna and Calella. The three and (especially) everything in between is the most typical and well-known landscape of the Costa Brava: cliffs full of vegetation that fall into a blue sea, forming beautiful coves and coves throughout the area.
The sun is setting and it's time to head home. It has been a fabulous weekend, in which we have undoubtedly found gold!
